Limbitless Journey MR
Overview
Limbitless Journey MR is a Mixed Reality therapeutic game designed to help ALS patients train with EMG-controlled wheelchairs. The project was selected as an exhibitor for the alt.ctrl.GDC 2025 showcase at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Project Scope
Re-implemented an existing desktop training game into a new Mixed Reality experience using Meta's XR SDK inside of Unity.
Features
EMG-Controlled Input
Integrated custom EMG (electromyography) controllers that allow patients to control their real motorized wheelchair and see flex values inside of Mixed Reality. This serves as a safe practice environment before real-world use.
Bluetooth Low Energy Integration
Updated the in-house BLE Unity interface for a new EMG controller
- Implementing BLE callback flow for asynchronous communication
- Handling device discovery, pairing, and data streaming
- Processing real-time muscle signal data
Mixed Reality Design
Overlays virtual training scenarios (portal and coin objectives) onto real environments
alt.ctrl.GDC
Being selected for alt.ctrl.GDC 2025 validates the project's innovative approach to assistive technology and showcases how alternative controllers can create meaningful gamified training experiences for accessibility.
Impact
- A safe training environment for motorized wheelchair operation
- Confidence building before use in the real world
- Therapy through gamification
Challenges
- Adapting desktop game mechanics to Mixed Reality
- Setting up bluetooth daisy chain from EMG device, to wheelchair controller, to headset.
- Optimizing performance for hardware
